Today wasn’t any old day in the life of Comber – today something remarkable happened! It all began with a nasty albeit not too unusual bout of turbulent weather. Storm clouds gathered, the sky turned navy and a few rumbles of thunder could be heard. Then, as the weather calmed down, a strange, white column of cloud seemed to break free and start spinning. It was a Tornado!

The month of May was dominated by a rare burst of blissful weather which spanned much of the UK. Day after day I promised myself to get out and enjoy it and day after day something new stopped me. So while this entry is completely pointless in many respects (other than to showcase the backside of a European Robin), it at least signifies my view from the inside, looking out.

First the recession, now the coldest winter in 30 years. It’s got to be said, modern times aren’t always what they’re cracked up to be. Nights are spent shivering, while days are consumed by news of the widespread travel chaos and impending apocalypse. It’s easy to see the annoyance in it all, and it’s even easier to complain. That is, until you step outside and build a snowman!

I’ve ridden the Belfast Eye, made frantic dashes from one shop to the next, eaten shortbread in the shape of a Christmas tree, ventured out on ice laden roads and watched as snowstorms brought Europe to a stop. I’ve passed buskers and brass bands, sampled the Continental market, and had relief wash over me as I conquered the high street and left with what I came for.

Mid-Autumn is particularly pleasing on the eye. In Northern Ireland, this is especially so in Botanic Gardens in Belfast, where brown leaves gather on the park floor and burning red ones crinkle and coil a few last times before floating down to keep their fallen friends company. There aren’t many better activities this time of year than simply walking outside and taking all the colours in.
