Every June, around this time, final year University students discover their long-awaited results. On this occasion it was the turn of two of my good friends – Leigh and Gareth, graduating from Computer Science and Law respectively. Gareth got a well deserved 2,1, while Leigh came out with a… well, no one will ever know because he plainly refused to open the letter!

You could say I hadn’t a bad twenty-first birthday, considering in the morning time I embarked on a helicopter flight over the Ards Peninsula, in the afternoon I took the controls of a Cessna for the very first time, and in the evening I had a whole raft of friends and family celebrating with me in a giant feast of food and frivolity. No, not bad at all. Now, how about a slightly elaborated version?

Is turning 18 such a big deal? The only sensible conclusion I can come up with is: it is at the time. Whatever I thought then, or think now, I do know that I was lucky enough to mark it with a large group of family and friends. People who hadn’t previously met each other came together for one night – and all on my behalf. Many thoughtful gifts were given and plenty of fun was had.
