Few people really ever plan to end up in the Limelight – it just kind of happens once all other suggestions have been exhausted.  But it wasn’t always like that. I remember coming to this place sometimes twice or thrice a week back when I was at University. It was a routine occurence. Yet oddly enough I wasn’t ever really into the normal nightclub activities of drinking or hooking up.

Queens University was like a ghost town while every inch of Belfast City Centre was being wrestled over by the frenzied masses. The market is gone. The chaos is here. It truly is the last Friday before Christmas. But despite the mayhem, I was able to get everything done (i.e. presents), and with enough time left to spare for a few games of Bowling and some banter with friends.

After hours sipping drinks in Katy Dalys (and having some spilt on us) it was off next door to the Limelight for the second time in a few weeks. Like buses, none come for ages and then two arrive in quick succession. The music was a true cheese fest, but would we have it any other way? Deep conversations amongst the brightly coloured spotlights finished the evening off nicely.

As luck would have it, now we don’t go out anymore, there’s a smoking ban. I thought therefore it was time to take advantage of this introduction of relatively clean air and visit the Limelight for the first time in 2007. The people have changed, the promotions have changed, the interior design has changed (a bit), but true to form, the music remains in its own delightful time warp.

On Friday we all gathered for a not-so surprise night out in honour of Gary’s Birthday. The evening, as it unfolded, will always be remembered for its conversations of politics (probably not the most wise of topics in a busy Belfast pub), philosophy and predictably less serious matters, all to the backdrop of candlelight and live acoustic music. We were the last group to get kicked out.
