We wander over to Queen Street, grab some brunch from Greggs, and ride the train one hour between Glasgow and Edinburgh. It’s New Years Eve, and if you’re heading to Edinburgh on this day it means only one thing – Hogmanay.  Celebrations range from markets to concerts and from street festivals to traditional dances. There’s no place more exciting in the UK on December 31st.

A first for a brand New Year! Video footage of my back garden! And not just any video footage – a record of why New Years events all over the north of the UK were cancelled at the last minute. Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool, Belfast – all gone. It’s not surprising therefore that I ended up just staying indoors this year. Who wants to be in a club or bar anyway?

A dark, ghostly day, down by the desolate, person-less Irish sea coast on the second day of the New Year. It absolutely miserable and barren – yet oddly beautiful. On a lighter topic, I spent New Years Eve achieving the highest score in a Karaoke contest to Keane’s – ‘Somewhere Only We Know’. I don’t know which image is more haunting. A somewhat weird night, ending what was a rather strange year. But just like the year, it was, overall, bizarrely alright. It may have looked to be taking a turn for the worse at one or two points, but in the end, everything was quite fine. As always, I learned from experiences and had an enjoyable time regardless. Now the burning question: what will my entry next year be like?
