Melody arrived on the same night as there was a birthday party for my Grandmother to attend, so she had a limited chance to recover from jet-lag. The following day didn’t provide much opportunity either – we dandered into Belfast and more specifically the Mandela Hall to see a gig – the Guillemots!

A (front row) balcony seat. An Orchestra. The legend that is Barry Norman! Could one get more cultured? Well, probably, but this was a step in the right direction. Somehow I can’t imagine the upper echelons of the bourgeoisie revelling in the rendition of classic movie scores. Even so, branching out is quite fun.

We made our way to Queen Street Station. But first thing was first: food for the train, from Greggs! The trip from Glasgow to Edinburgh takes just under an hour. We get off at Haymarket and meet Lucinda. After dropping luggage at the flat, her and Kira are kind enough to take us into Princes Street and advise a route home for later.

Sleeping in and having 10 minutes to get up, dressed and packed isn’t the most encouraging start to a week long trip. However, we made it to Belfast port on time, and set sail for Stranraer on board the Stena HSS – a ship on which I once had a birthday party. Unlike that time, I wasn’t just staying on board and coming back to Belfast.

We decided to head out into Belfast for Karen’s Birthday, and there just so happened to be a gig on in Mandela Hall. No, it wasn’t a random coincidence – we did know about it in advance. Yes, Idlewild were in town promoting their new album “Make Another World”, and it would be the fourth time I had seen the Scottish Rockers.
