Hiring a car or relying on public transport isn’t really an option in most Pacific nations. Roads can deteriorate quickly, signage is often non-existent and bus timetables are improvised at best. The best bet for exploration is therefore a ’round island tour’. What makes these different from tours elsewhere is the philosophy of the guide. There is no such thing as a scheduled stop.

When queried about the different destinations I’d be visiting on this trip, “Vanuatu” always spawned expressions of great puzzlement. “Where is Vanuatu?” I’d be asked time and again. Even my Brother Craig, who would end up travelling there with me, was clueless to its existence prior to planning. Bearing in mind some people don’t know where Japan is, I guess it’s expected.
