Doha has been referred to as one of the dullest capital cities in the world, with the majority of it just a seething hot construction site not yet completed. So why would anyone come here? Well, usually the reason is Qatar Airways. That’s right, with a long enough transit time its possible to get out and have a look around, which believe me, is better than sitting for ages in the airport.

Nothing is quite real when you travel. Places once so distant lose their forlornness. Hours get swallowed up while days erode with their meaning. There is no Thursday or Friday. It’s all just one long path from departure to destination. For a lot of people airports are obnoxious, intrusive places, fraught with frustration and worry. For me they are a gateway to the world.
