Ah, the final stop on 2007 trip to Italy. We arrived in Pisa on a train from Florence yesterday evening, and searched the city streets for our slightly hard to find hotel. We found it, and after a brief post-check-in wander, got some shut-eye in preparation for our last day. The main item on the agenda? What else? The Leaning Tower.
While other places i’ve visited so far have strongly advertised the ‘no photography‘ rule, I kind of got the feeling that the Uffizi Gallery and Pitti Palace were somewhat serious about it – and I didn’t chat for 3 hours to a crazy bald Californian surfer dude and a New Yorker who reminded me of Ross from Friends - just to get kicked out.
What I neglected to mention yesterday was that we transferred to a new hotel in the city centre (a much more sophisticated, stylish one), close to Termini Station, meaning we had a very relaxed start this morning as we could just stroll around the corner and catch our train to Florence with as little effort as possible.
We took a train to the suburbs and clambered on a bus bound for Appia Antica – the first road built in Rome. To say faces were pressed up against windows on this bus would be an understatement. It was so bad we had to get out at San Sebastian Fort and walk the rest of the way (never take for granted the use of your limbs).
We weren’t sure whether we’d need our passports for the Vatican, so we brought them in case. No border checks though, just an archway with old Latin inscriptions where you can run back and forth and visit each nation fifty times. Quite juvenile, so we decided to act cultured and concentrate on feinting the camcorder wielding masses.
