During a recent trip to Hong Kong, I was keen – as many travellers are – to find suitable gifts to bring home for family; and for my Brother, Craig, one idea in particular came to mind. While the item itself won’t be interesting to everyone, my attempts to find it probably will – as it took me on a journey through some of Hong Kong’s most colorful districts, malls and night markets.

Hong Kong Island is famed for its trams and its peak. Both are great ways to gain an insight and an overview, but for the awkward bits in between, a worthy option is the hop-on, hop-off Rickshaw Sightseeing bus. It’s nice and cheap at just 50HKD, and there’s two routes on offer – ‘Heritage’ and ‘Metropolis’ (and before anyone asks, no I don’t work for them – sadly).

The Temple of 10,000 Buddhas delivers where other lavishly named places fail to – it actually does contain the 10,000 individual Buddhas promised in the name. Nearly 12,000, in fact! Initially it’s hard to believe. How can one temple contain so many? Even more amazing is that each one is unique. It’s not surprising then that it took the founder, Yuet Kai, a full ten years to complete!

There isn’t much to be said for Tsing Yi on a murky, overcast day. In fact come to think of it, there isn’t much to say about it on any day. Besides a lot of residential housing, some heavy industry and a large container port, there is a distinct lack of anything on this island – and certainly even less for a tourist. It’s not all bad though. Having local insight improves the outlook considerably.

Hikers are spoilt for choice in Hong Kong. Beyond the major conurbations, every region and district has a network of scenic walking trails, each tailored for varying levels of experience and stamina. My own personal favourite is the area of Sai Kung – in the far east of Hong Kong. Here you’ll find miles of rugged, unspoilt landscape, which on a good day, is spectacular to traverse.
